Southend-On-Sea City Council have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Bridge and Structures Engineer to join our dedicated Project Delivery Team and Highways Asset Management Team on a full time and permanent basis.

 

As a Senior Bridge and Structures Engineer, you will lead the technical execution of design and engineering activities on a variety of highway structures projects, including feasibility studies, consultations, site inspections, surveys, contract administration duties, reporting and technical queries. You will carry out inspections on all forms of highway structures with due regard to hazards, safety and risk.  Identify, record, and evaluate maintenance needs following inspection.  To include General Inspections / Principal Inspections / Special Inspections to highway structures.

 

You will use the NEC3 / NEC 4 Forms of Contract; Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works; Specification for Highway Works and the Standard Method of Measurement, Design Manual for Roads and Bridges. Deputising for the Head of Service / Service Manager as required. You will provide timely and accurate advice to senior leaders/members/local councillors and the general public on all highway structures related matters. Ensuring all correspondence and telephone calls responded to efficiently and effectively to meet key performance indicators, responding within corporate timescales.

 

You will have direct reports of up to 5 team members.

The post also involves managing and monitoring budgets and project records.

What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this post, good working knowledge and understanding of structural behaviour, design codes and materials is essential. Ability to design highway structures to Eurocodes with limited direction / supervision is also essential for this role. It is vital that you can carry out and review general inspections / principal inspections & special inspections to highway structures.

This role will suit individuals that have previously worked in Structural Engineering or worked for other local authorities / Network Rail / TFL in a similar post. Previous geotechnical experience will be highly desirable but not essential. Knowledge and understanding of slope stability, ground investigation and testing/reporting will be advantageous.

 

In order to be successful in your application, you should have either:

 

  • Degree or HNC in Civil Engineering / Highways or Structural Engineering
  • Membership of (or working towards) becoming a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer, CEng or MIStructE and Significant relevant post graduate experience.

                                                        OR

  • Equivalent knowledge and experience of working within at least one or more related fields, one of which must be structures related (Highways Design/Maintenance, Traffic Management, Road Safety or Parking)
  • Project management qualification.
